The reference entry for the category. A precise definition, the origin of the term, and the boundaries that separate it from real-time and contextual marketing.
A "moment" is any signal — a wicket, a market swing, a weather flip, a scoreline, a box-office milestone, a headline — that concentrates attention on a narrow window of time. Moment marketing detects those signals, matches them to a brand's message and rights, and delivers a creative execution while the moment is still hot.
Working definition
Moment marketing = signal detection + creative match + in-window delivery.
The phrase entered the marketing lexicon after Oreo's "You can still dunk in the dark" tweet during the 2013 Super Bowl blackout — an ad that ran because the moment did, not because a media plan told it to. Agencies described what happened as "moment marketing" and the label stuck.
Over the following decade the practice matured from opportunistic social posts into a discipline: newsroom-style creative teams, signal feeds (sports, finance, weather, entertainment), pre-approved templates, and — more recently — automated platforms that close the loop between signal and delivery.
The three terms overlap in casual use but describe different jobs. Moment marketing is the narrowest and the most time-bound of the three.
